Probation specifically refers to community supervision that takes the place of jail time and is typically reserved for minor offenses and those without extensive criminal histories who are not as likely to re-offend. On the other hand, parole refers to supervision granted by releasing an individual from prison early to serve the rest of their term in the general public while overseen by a parole officer.

This resource outlines how to run probation searches in New Mexico, along with other relevant matters such as supervising officers or violations. It also briefly reveals details about locating parole information.

How To Check if an Individual Is Under Supervision for Free: New Mexico Probation Search

In New Mexico, the Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA) establishes that the public has the right to access and inspect public information, and almost all state and local government records are available for review.1 Very few records are considered private, letting individuals access many criminal records quickly via a probation search in New Mexico.

There’s one tool that satisfies every aspect of this article — The New Mexico Corrections Department Offender Search Tool.2 With this tool, it’s possible to locate individuals on probation, parole or who are incarcerated.

There’s an option to search for absconders as well, revealing those who have opted to flee from community supervision. More will be discussed later about locating violations and absconders.

This search tool is incredibly convenient to use. To begin, users can input:

  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Offender Number
  • Offender Status
  • Age Range (From & To)

At a minimum, a first name, last name, or offender number (partial names will work, too) need to be submitted to generate results. Of course, the more information included, the more narrow the search results will become.

For example, if searching for someone with the last name “Johnson,” filling “John” in the last name slot will still yield results, but to a much larger degree. Common names could generate hundreds of matching or similar results at once.

When the results are generated, they will be listed in alphabetical order and displayed with:

  • Last Name
  • First Name
  • Middle Name (Or Initial)
  • Offender ID
  • Supervision Status

Those on probation or parole will be marked as such. By clicking on an individual’s details, it will include significantly more information about them.

This includes their offender ID, age, height, weight, eye color and other personal information. It may also include religion, education and complexion, as well as ethnicity and display any known aliases, if relevant.

Following this field, it’s possible to see an individual’s current offenses — that is, the offenses they are currently serving a sentence for. It will also include the court judgment, which may include a guilty plea or a guilty verdict. It also displays past offenses if the individual has them, allowing searchers to identify if an individual has an extensive criminal history while performing a probation search.

For questions regarding probationer’s information or to verify information, call the Probation & Parole office at (866)416-9867.

This information may also be useful for identifying the correct probation department to oversee an individual’s supervision, as it can point you toward where in the state the crime occurred, which is likely where they’re still serving their sentence. More information will come later about locating a probationer’s supervising officer.

Find New Mexico Probationers Using County or City Agencies

Completing a local probation search follows a similar process, regardless of municipality or county. Some make it easier to locate records than others, but the information required remains the same.

The previously mentioned New Mexico Corrections Department Offender Search Tool is recommended by numerous counties and municipalities when seeking information about whether an offender is on probation or parole. It’s the most efficient tool for a quick search.

However, there may be cases where individuals want more information than is provided there. It’s possible to request further records from the court clerks in the county in which a probationer offended. Below is the contact information for the county clerks in the most populous counties in the state:

Bernalillo County: In Bernalillo County, searchers can request case records for $0.35 per page from the county’s Criminal Clerk’s Office Criminal Division.3

The Criminal Division also recommends using the New Mexico Courts Case Lookup, which provides records for the State’s Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, District Court, Municipal Court and Magistrate Court.

While this tool doesn’t return probation information, even in the disposition, it can be a useful starting point, giving access to a free court record that states that a crime occurred and a guilty verdict was entered. Because more detailed records come with per-page fees, this can help prevent paying for records that lead nowhere and help you narrow down which city or county to focus your search.

Alternatively, contact the Bernalillo County Criminal Clerk’s Office for inquiries or questions about these records.4

Within the register of actions activity category, the judgment, sentence and commitment will be listed, whether someone was sent to jail or sentenced to probation. If the probation has been completed, it will also list the date the supervision ended.

City of Rio Rancho: In the City of Rio Rancho, some court records pertaining to probation may be accessed through the city’s municipal court.10

More specifically, the Rio Rancho Municipal Court’s Cases by Party Search allows users to input as little as a last name and review criminal cases within the city. How To See Someone’s Probation Violations & Contact Their Supervising Officer

Sometimes, it becomes necessary to locate an individual’s probation officer, whether to learn status or to report violations of their sentence. If you know of a probationer who has violated the terms of their probation, it’s generally recommended that you report them to their supervising officer.

This is easier to achieve than in most other states, as the information is often readily available with the right tools to perform a probation search in New Mexico.

The New Mexico Corrections Department Offender Search Tool will simplify the process of locating an individual’s probation officer.2

  • Select the details tab of an individual’s results.
  • Review the left-hand column of results under “Details.”
  • Look for the row “Facility/Region” and “Probation/Parole Officer.”

This will provide necessary information to identify not only the individual’s probation office but also the name of their probation officer, greatly simplifying the process, especially compared to many other states, where this information can be difficult to come by.

Once the officer and facility have been located, it just comes down to finding the correct contact information. This information is readily available on the New Mexico Corrections Department website, as is the contact information for the direct probation supervisor.11 This site also details information about what standard probation supervision entails, including the conditions a probationer must abide by during their sentence.

To find the right office, follow these steps:

  • Choose the corresponding region listed in the offender search results on the New Mexico Corrections Department website.
  • Scroll through the list to locate the listed office.
  • Use the contact information provided to reach the named probation officer.

In Albuquerque, the most populous city in the state, for example, there are numerous offices, all overseen by the Region II head office.12

The most efficient way to locate a probation officer for someone in Albuquerque, therefore, would be to either identify the exact office or name of the probation officer in the New Mexico Corrections Department Offender Search Tool or to contact the Region II office:

Probation & Parole Region II Office
615 1st Street Northwest
Albuquerque, NM 97102

Phone: 505-259-9667

Upon reaching someone, request to speak to the correct probation officer or leave a message for the probation officer of the probationer you identify. This should ensure the message makes it to the correct person.

How To Perform a New Mexico Parolee Search

There could be several reasons to identify someone up for parole or who is currently on parole, such as to attend parole board hearings or to generally be informed of those in the public.

Unfortunately, in New Mexico, not everyone can attend a parole board hearing — only victims are allowed to participate. However, it’s possible to access other records.

Searching for parolees in New Mexico is much like identifying probationers. Using the New Mexico Corrections Department Offender Search Tool, you can review records to see sentencing information for the individual suspected to be on parole. If someone’s results appear with “Probation/Parole” in their status, review their records to identify where they are currently under supervision.

Santa Fe, NM 87508

Email: [email protected]

With the tools listed above, performing a successful New Mexico probation search will be a seamless endeavor for citizens.
